MURUGAN IN ANCIENT TAMIL LITERATURE-16
This song of Paripaadal has been composed by the Sangam poet Nal achudhaaar. He is praising the Lord at Thiruparangkundram as follows:
'' Dear Muruga! your royal elephant is wearing the slippers on 4 limbs which were made out of the skins of great demons. This is the symbol of your victory and braveness. It is alos decorated with lotus petals and peacock feathers.
Your brave long arm is holding the sacred spear which has killed the demon who took the form of the mountain and blocked your army in midst of the seas.
Your broad shoulders are adorned with the garland made of valli flowers and kadhamba flowers and tender leaves.
Your sacred abode is this hillock which resembles your elephant from long view. So I have rested on your hillock and praising you as much as I can, please accept my devotion and love!''
Scenes upon the hillock:
A woman danced according to the drum beats. Her anklets made of gold and pearls made sound and it got echoed across the hill. Another couple saw this dance and the wife got angry that her husband is staring at the dancer with love.
There were many such dancers who were doing makeup. One smeared her chest with sandal paste. One wore many chains and garlands. One saw the mirror and trimmed her eye brows.
Suddenly there were raining clouds gathered and peacocks have started dancing. Dragon flies were buzzing around wild flowers. Cascade sounded like the drum beats.
Romantic swimming scene:
A woman was swimming in the cold spring and she asked her husband to throw the stick to hold and climb to the bank. But he ragged her by throwing a plate full of scent powders. So she was worried and he enjoyed that and suddenly jumped into the spring and hugged her.
The blowing southern monsoon winds:
The whole hillock got swept with the southern monsoon winds which brought the fragrance of sandal paste of men, flowers of maidens and smokes from the sanctum.
Poet's prayers:
''Muruga! you hold the spear which destroyed the whole demons clan and you are appearing with 12 shoulders and 6 handsome faces. You are the god of death to all the evil powers. Please bless me and my family to be always enjoying the same devotion upon your feet like today!''

MURUGAN IN ANCIENT TAMIL LITERATURE-15
This song of Paripaadal has been composed by the Sangam poet Nan paana naar. He has set the proper tunes for this song also. In this poem he has recorded how the Pandiya king and his queens have started evoking the devotional - spiritual life and made the society to follow them. This poem is the proof for the social change which happened from the royal family.
King's devotion to God:
People of Madurai city are very brave and wise. No one can conquer them. They followed their ruler and his queens along with wise ministers who are always ready to solve any crisis. Queens of the great Pandiya king have decorated well and many people enjoyed good make up and started walking towards Thiruparankundram. The king along with his queens climbed the steps of the hillock and reached the sanctum of Murugan. This looked like the moon with 27 stars coming around the sacred Himalayas.
Rich people took their journey in chariots, horses and elephants. The whole way got spilled with the flowers and garlands brought by the devotees. This resembled the the moon with its 27 stars traveling in the cosmos.
***Every body rushed to the sacred hillock of Murugan like the saints who enter into the world of salvation.
Scenes near the sacred hillock:
The chariots were parked near the foot hill of the shrine. Horses and elephants were tied in respective places allotted for them and fed by the soldiers with grasses and sugarcanes.
Aloof little girl:
A little girl was missed by her family and she got scared. She went near the big rocks and dens in the hillock and shouted the family members' names. That voice got echoed all around the hillock. This resembled the chants made by priests inside the shrine. What ever we do it become a gesture of devotion to the lord in hillock.
Scenes inside the temple complex:
Few maidens gave bananas to monkeys and bears living in the dense bushes upon the hillock. Few offered food to elephants which belong to the temple and left to the spring and gave food to fishes also. Few plucked the wild flowers and threw into the spring and enjoyed. Plenty of flowers were recorded by the poet to describe the garlands wore by the people. The offering of various flowers as garlands to God is the symbol of shedding all our thoughts and cleaning our self .
The art gallery:
Many people climbed the stairs and started watching and enjoying the various paintings placed in the art museum. There were pictures based on Skandha puranam and Ramayanam. A man showed the characters such as Indra, Agalikai and Gouthma saint from Ramayanam to his wife. A couple enjoyed the painting of God of love with his consort. Few enjoyed the 9 planets and the sun painting. Many admired the floral decoration of the main shrine.
The musical hall:
Many were playing flutes and also Bharama veena to praise the God. Many danced for the drum beats and joined along with priests for the rituals.
The flag hoisting ceremony:
The temple elephant got well decorated with bells, jewels and dresses. Saffron paste was painted in various spots of the elephant's body. Women lifted the sacred flag of Murugan upon its head and sang in praise of God. They also offered sacred food to the elephant and small amount of the prasadham was taken by them.
They prayed for good family life. Young women worshipped the flag to marry good men. Lovers gathered there and worshipped for their wedding and accepted the sacred food.

'' Dear Muruga! you have decided to treat heaven and Earth as the same and married the tribal huntress SreeValli. So the sacred hillock became very important for people on this Earth. You have been mounted upon the royal elephant of Indra to kill all the demons. Let all my words be in praise of your sacred feet! Let my words in prasie be your feast for the ears.

This song was also composed by the Sangam poet Nalachuthannaar. He is praising the Lord as follows:
Muruga! demons have conquered all the heavens and took abode in the midst of the oceans. You have killed them and gave peace to all devathaas. You have killed the demon Soorapadman who took the form of the mango tree. So devaathaas have requested you to stay in THITUPARANKUNDRAM. Because of this this small hillock is very sacred like Himalayas.
The charming romance near the hillock:
An young man saw a beautiful peacock and admired its feathers. So his lady love became angry and worried that he is insulting her just by watching the bird.
He replied,'' dear1 do not scold me . I feel pity for this peacock because there is no mate for this bird to admire as I admire you''.
Another scene: Poets condemned the unacceptable sexual life through their songs. Poets were te social reformers.
A man went in love with a prostitute and changed his mind to come back to his family. So he send a messenger called ''paanan''[ folk singers and mediators of ancient Tamil society]. But the wife's friend refused to accept the message. She says, '' dear Paana adorned with the golden chain gifted by the man of indiscipline, please ask him to accept his mistakes before he arrives here, because the nail prints on his broad shoulders are the proof for his unacceptable sexual acts''.
The poet is asking the society to come out of unacceptable behavior and to seek for salvation which is the goal of human birth.

Your hillock is covered with dark monsoon clouds within which I can see the long sacred flag post fluttering with the flag hoisted to celebrate your annual festival. This scene resembles your brave elephant mount.
The art gallery inside the shrine complex resembles the army of God of love. The sacred spring and farms with wild flowers resembles his arrow pouch. The monsoon flowers are shrunken because of heavy rain drops and they resemble the victims of God of love.
The dragon flies are singing around the wild jasmines and it resembles the musical consorts in your shrine. The clouds resemble Indra's rain bow. Love God has showered the arrows of romance upon you and your consorts as trees with flowers. The cascades of the sacred hillock adorns the rocks like the long pearl chains which adorn your broad chest.
The various noise levels, thunders and bells make the hillock as a battle field of love and divine romance. Many birds have started eating the grains in the farms. The
farmers are chasing them away and the birds reach the sacred spring in your hillock to catch fish. This line says that when the life is not supported by any one, we have to believe God's feet for refuge. The spring with fishes denotes this meaning. This line also teach us the positive thinking about our life with devotion and spirituality.

Muruga! the entire hillock is echoing with various sounds made by various bells and instruments for rituals and I wish you to bless with the life under your sacred feet along with my family and friends for ever. Make all of us to love and accept your feet like the home where we live and give us the salvation!
